Commission of Spirits names the company of spiritual guides, elevated ancestors, and the Dead who accompany and influence a person throughout life. This commission may appear as a spiritual court, a nation of spirits, or a collective of presences who walk with us, assist our development, strengthen our protection, and support the fullest expression of our lives, gifts, and spiritual work.
In this three class workshop series, we will study the history of spirit commissions and learn how to bring them forward in our practices. Drawing on Latin American Espiritismo and Afro Diasporic practices, Southern Conjure traditions, and European Witchcraft, we will focus on identifying the spirits who walk with us, building relationship with them, and learning how to employ or engage them in our spiritual work.
We will explore how to identify and cultivate relationships with your spiritual helpers through altar building, mediumship development, ancestral court work, the practice of passing a spirit in balance, and practical methods for strengthening connection with and working alongside your people. Through dreams, signs, sensations, prayer, offerings, altar work, intuition, and ritual attention, we will examine how spiritual guides, elevated ancestors, and the Dead communicate, the roles they fulfill, the assistance they provide, and the ways they participate in and shape the spiritual life of the practitioner.
Participants will deepen their understanding of how spirit commissions function in practice, how relationships with these spirits develop over time, and how to engage them in practical, grounded, and spiritually effective ways. We will give attention to the different roles that guides, elevated ancestors, and the Dead may hold, as well as the ways they can support protection, healing, divination, magical work, spiritual development, and the unfolding of one’s path.
This workshop includes social and cultural history, spiritual philosophy, discussion, reflection, and magical practices. This is a non initiatory educational and devotional workshop for those who want to understand their Commission of Spirits, strengthen relationship with spiritual guides, elevated ancestors, and the Dead, and learn how to engage these forces in their spiritual practice.
